Antigua, a paradise in the Caribbean, is renowned worldwide for its sailing opportunities. Whether you’re a spectator or a seasoned sailor, this stunning island offers a plethora of world-class events and breathtaking cruising experiences.

My personal journey into the Caribbean began with the sailing industry, and although I’ve hung up my sailor’s hat, I now have the privilege of being a spectator at the thrilling sailing events hosted by Antigua. Moreover, my children have the opportunity to learn how to sail in the most idyllic conditions imaginable.

Antigua’s sailing season runs from November to May and attracts enthusiasts from all corners of the globe. The island’s reliable winds, high seas, and dramatic scenery create the perfect setting for international competitions, while the warm waters, sheltered bays, and genuine island hospitality make it an ideal destination for sailing lessons and charter experiences.

If you’re lucky enough to own a house in Antigua, you’ll find yourself perfectly positioned to participate in or watch these incredible sailing events. Just last month, the island hosted the RORC Caribbean 600, a challenging race covering 600 nautical miles across 11 captivating Caribbean islands. For three exhilarating days, boats competed non-stop, and from the southern part of the island, you could witness the boats vying for the best position, with helicopters gracefully soaring between the sails.

In April, Antigua becomes the host of Classics Week, a magnificent event where a fleet of beautiful yachts, including traditional island craft, classic schooners, and Tall Ships, race for four days. These classic yachts also participate in the spectacular Concours d’Elégance, an opportunity to marvel at over 50 classic yachts majestically moored at the Antigua Yacht Club Marina.

Antigua Sailing Week, held at the end of April, is considered one of the world’s top three most prestigious regattas. Sailors from around the globe gather here to test their skills, and the entire island comes alive with vibrant parties and celebrations in English Harbour. Spectators can choose from various vantage points to witness the thrilling action, and for a unique experience, they can even join the popular “chase the race” trips, following the races from the water.

Although summer is generally a quieter season for sailing, this year Antigua will proudly host the Optimist North American Championships. The Optimist is a small, single-handed sailing dinghy sailed by young sailors aged 8 to 15. It is the largest sailing class in the world, and many of today’s top sailors began their journeys in an Optimist. Antigua’s thriving Optimist program provides ample opportunities for local children to learn sailing skills through after-school programs and frequent regattas.

Beyond the excitement of racing and competition, Antigua offers a serene setting for those seeking a more tranquil sailing experience. Chartering a boat allows you to explore the island’s sheltered bays and stunning beaches at your own pace. Numerous charter companies operate from Jolly Harbour or English Harbour, catering to various group sizes and preferences.

If all the sailing activities sound a bit too energetic for you, fear not. Antigua offers plenty of options to sit back, relax, and indulge in a refreshing drink and delicious food while taking in the picturesque view of the beautiful boats moored at our marinas and close to our pristine beaches.
